After every birthday I stop and think, "hmmm what cool stuff can I do this year that I couldn't do last year?". Fifteen, learners permit.. But SIXTEEN meant I got a new car. Wait wait wait, 18 I graduated high school AND got to do away with my curfew. Nineteen I got to move away to school in my own dorm, see ya parents! Twenty wasn't a huge deal other than doing away with the "teen" at the end of my age. And then.. Drum roll please! TWENTY-FRIGGEN-ONE! We all know what that means, binge drinking is no longer frowned upon.. as much. Waltzing into 7-11 at 4am to buy Natty Light for the whole crew, or on a classy night a bottle of cheap wine? Cake walk! Shots at the bar that you get super cheap because you're a cute girl or hot guy and the bartender likes your boobs/biceps? No problemo!
Twenty two is where is all starts to end.. When you turn 22, there's no cooler thing to do than when you were 21. Okay maybe I lied a little bit. I'm one step closer to being able to rent a car without the ridiculous insurance fee. Other than THAT doozie, all I can really think about is the lack of that smirk and "Enjoy it babe, it's the most fun you'll ever have!".. Now I get, "So what's your 5 year plan Meg?" or "Law School's right around the corner eh?". Thanks guys, as if I didn't have 25 and the ever impending "mid life crisis" staring me in the face now I've got all THAT big girl stuff to worry about!
Now I won't say they are all big fat jerks for reminding me that it's time to grow up.. They're right, I'll admit. I had my years of all night sorority socials and playing Social Chair and Vice President of Drunken Sisters. I did my fair share of playing the "tailgate 'til we can't make it to the stadium at the frat house next door" game. Sure, I have my collection of college bar mugs, t shirts, shot glasses and Monster Marg memories. (I will throw in there that I have all of these memories due to the fact that I didn't start drinking until the end of my reign as Queen 21.. long story that I'm sure we'll address at a later date) But just because I'm 22 now, back in my home town finishing up some remaining classes until I start law school, that means I have to grow up? Ah who am I kidding, I guess it does, but we're going to do it the fun way!
My friends and I compiled a Bucket List of sorts. My "As Magen 'Grows Up' this year.. to keep her fun" List. This blog was part of it and will continue to serve as a documentation of the fun I have knocking the rest of it out. Ahem, WE have, knocking it out. Until next time, I'll leave you with this;
"You have to do your own growing up, no matter how tall your grandfather was." -Abe Lincoln
